Currently four types of treatment are used: Surgery, Radiotherapy (RT), Chemotherapy (QT) and Immunotherapy (IT). Surgery is the most common treatment for intracranial tumors. RT is the use of X-rays or gamma and its purpose is to eliminate tumor cells from the outside and reduce their size (external beam RT); RT can also be used by placing radioactive materials into the tumor, through thin plastic tubes, radioisotopes, in order to remove the tumor cells from the inside (internal RT). QT uses drugs to kill tumor cells. It can be administered orally, parenterally or intrathecally; QT is considered a systemic treatment.
Actualmente se emplean cuatro clases de tratamiento: Cirugía, Radioterapia (RT), Quimioterapia (QT) and Inmunoterapia (IT). La cirugía es el tratamiento más común para los tumores intracraneales. La RT consiste en el uso de rayos X o gamma y su propósito es eliminar las células tumorales desde el exterior y reducir su tamaño (RT de haz externo); la RT también se puede usar poniendo materiales radioactivos dentro del tumor, a través de tubos plásticos delgados, radioisótopos, con el fin de eliminar las células tumorales desde el interior (RT interna). La QT usa medicamentos para eliminar las células tumorales. Se puede administrar en forma oral, parenteral o intratecal; la QT se considera un tratamiento sistémico.
